Explore the inspiring and challenging landscape in the Ruapehu region on bike. We know you'll be exhilarated by the varied landscapes and typography discovered on the many trails.
Two of the seven trails which are part of the New Zealand Cycle Trail Project are found in the region; Central North Island Rail Trail and Mountains to the Sea.
Cycling Trails
Old Coach Road
Early stages of the Old Coach Road cycleway, near Ohakune have already been completed. This is part of the Mountains to the Sea trail. Initially it was the carriage-way for travellers before the train track was completed through the heart of the North Island. Seeped in history, there are great views and sights, including the Hapuawhenua Viaduct.

42 Traverse
This is considered to be one of the premium bike tracks in the North Island, located in State Forest 42 in the Tongariro Forest Park. Follow old logging roads as you navigate challenging downhills and muscle testing uphill paths. Starting at Kapoors Road, Taurewa on Highway 47, the trail is around 46 kilometres long with an overall descent of 570 metres.
The Bridge to Nowhere
An iconic trail, it generally follows the Mangapurua Stream before reaching the Bridge to Nowhere, on the Whanganui River. The surrounding land is seeped in rich Maori and early colonial history.
Fisher's Track
Be ready for a steady climb to the summit and then zoom along the 17km downhill stretch. Located near Whakahoro and Whanganui National Park.
