Taumarunui and Tongariro Forest Area

Taumarunui

Taumarunui, the largest town in the region, is located in the northern part of the Ruapehu region.

It is here the Whanganui and Ongarue rivers meet. Historically the locale was an important centre as a junction for canoe routes up and down the river and beyond to the hinterland.

Today, it is from this location that many Whanganui River journeys start.

The main railway line, between Wellington and Auckland passes through Taumarunui.   To the east is the beginning of the Forgotten World Highway which leads to New Plymouth.

Tongariro Forest Conservation Area

To the south of Taumarunui is this pristine area which attracts 4-wheel drivers, mountain bikers and fishers.

This is the location of the 42 Traverse, one of the most popular and remote, mountain biking areas in New Zealand.

Over the period from 1903 to 1978 the area supported 43 timber mills.  A proposal to convert the area to farm land and pine plantations was overcome by strong lobby groups who wanted to see the area preserved for recreation.  In 1978 the area was placed under the administration of the Department of Conservation.
