Welcome to Ruapehu
Where adventure begins
Discover the rugged natural beauty and expansive awe-inspiring landscape of the Ruapehu region in the heart of New Zealand's North Island.
It is within this natural playground that you'll be inspired and captivated by the majesty of the region. Dominating the landscape are the dramatic volcanic mountains of Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe. Skiing and riding enthusiasts flock to Mt Ruapehu' s Whakapapa or Turoa ski areas during the ski season (June - November).
Tongariro National Park, which is also a World Heritage area is home to the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing.
There is no better region for mountain biking than Ruapehu. The region is proudly home to not one but two of the National Cycleway trails; Central North Island Rail Trail and Mountains to the Sea, amongst others.
Navigate the deep gorges, surrounded by rich flora and fauna bush areas of the Whanganui River, at your leisure.
Surrounding the region are the urban settlements of Taumarunui, National Park, Ohakune, Raetihi and at the far eastern reaches, the army town of Waiouru.
