Canoe and Kayak in the Ruapehu District
For those who enjoy a slow and peaceful pace but are prepared to exert a bit of energy, canoeing or kayaking down the Whanganui, Retaruke or Ongarue rivers is the way to go. Freedom or guided trips are available and operators provide pick up and drop off services.
The Whanganui Journey is the only river trip that is part of the Great Walks networks. While the complete journey from Taumarunui to Pipiriki takes five days, shorter legs can be undertaken.
Some suggested routes include:
One day: Taumarunui to Ohinepane (21.5 km)
Two days: Taumarunui to Whakahoro (58 km)
Three days: Whakahoro to Pipiriki (87.5 km)
Five days: Taumarunui to Pipiriki (145.5km)
A highly useful reference manual entitled the Guide to the Whanganui River is available from the i-SITE Visitor Information Centres in Taumarunui and Ohakune. Produced by the New Zealand Recreational Canoeing Association Inc. it retails for around NZ$10.00 .
